Best mic for zoom F4

  • Hi,

I'm planning to buy a 3dio mic but was wondering which would be he best option to use with a Zoom F4? The one with the 3.5 or xlr? Would either work or would I need additional power?

    thanks in advance!

  • Hi @Kim N Munro,

Thank you for reaching out to us.

The answer to your question depends on how you plan to use the mic. Here are some things to consider:

Phantom Power Battery Drain: The Zoom F4 does offer phantom power (required for using the XLR outputs of a condenser microphone), however supplying phantom power will drain the F4 batteries quicker than using the 3.5mm output of the 3Dio. Since the 3Dio is a stereo microphone, it is providing phantom power to 2 XLR outputs.

Audio Quality: The 3.5mm output of the 3Dio is powered by the 9V battery located inside the center enclosure of the microphone. Therefore it doesn't need power from the Zoom H4. However, the 3.5mm output doesn't have as wide of a dynamic range (the range between the lowest level and the highest level which the microphone can handle) as the XLRs and therefore doesn't have the same audio quality.

Both microphones are compatible with the Zoom F4. If you plan to use the mic indoors as well, then we'd recommend getting the XLR model since it offers both the 3.5mm and XLR outputs, so you have options.

I hope this info helps. Let us know if you have any other questions.

    Best regards,
    ~Brian
