How does Binaural work?

Binaural Must be Listened to on Headphones

In order to experience true binaural sound, left and right isolation of the ears is required using any headphones or earbuds. Listening to binaural on speakers results in cross-talk and a loss of directionality.

Binaural Provides Directionality

Binaural audio allows us to pinpoint the locations of sounds in every direction using only a stereo signal.

The Shape of the Microphone Matters

True binaural audio requires a microphone with human-shaped ears in order to capture and replicate how we hear the natural world. The ears are spaced about 6" apart to mimic the average width of the human head.

Head Related Transfer Function (HRTF)

HRTF is an engineering term to describe the way that our head and ears shape the sounds that we hear. Despite the lack of a full dummy head, the shape of the 3Dio ears and ear disks are designed to maximize the binaural realism of the HRTF that you hear, while still providing a portable binaural audio solution.

About Us

3Dio is a family business. Jeff Anderson, Founder and CEO, has been researching and experimenting with immersive audio for 20 years. In 2000, he developed an 8-channel recording and playback system for interactive 360 audio, even though there was no use for it at the time. In the late-2000's, Jeff re-discovered binaural audio and went searching for a binaural microphone to make his own recordings. Unable to find anything that satisfied his curiosity and budget, he decided to build one himself. He used initial prototypes to develop a binaural synthesis software engine for a tech startup, while simultaneously working a full-time electrical engineering job. He made countless prototypes of the microphone in his free time, refining the design and sourcing various materials. Then, after a few years he decided that he wanted to be able to capture video along with binaural audio in a convenient way (without a full dummy head). In 2012, the very first Free Space Binaural Microphone was born in Jeff's garage. Soon after, he would release the Free Space Pro and later the Omni series. Today, Jeff continues to develop and engineer all 3Dio microphones.

After attending recording engineering school many years ago, Jeff's younger brother Brian would often assist Jeff in creating 3D audio experiments. While Jeff was building the company, Brian held various positions in Marketing, SEO, and Ecommerce. In 2016, when Jeff called asking for assistance pouring molds for the ears, Brian quit his job as a Product Manager to help his brother with the business, eventually taking over Marketing & Operations.

At 3Dio, we manufacture professional binaural microphones that are the premier 3D audio recording device for Gaming Audio Design, Filmmaking, ASMR, VR Virtual Reality, Field Recording and Recording Engineering. Our mission is to provide affordable, binaural audio solutions with professional quality sound. Although we are a very small company, we make it a top priority to deliver excellent customer service and assistance, so please do not hesitate to reach out to us with any questions.

3Dio Microphones in ASMR

Experience ASMR in 3Dio Binaural Audio

From the early beginnings of the ASMR phenomenon, 3Dio microphones have helped provide countless tingles and triggers for millions of people to relax, de-stress and relieve anxiety. ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) is often described as a tingling sensation on the skin that occurs on the head, the back of the neck, or upper back. Many people listen to ASMR videos to evoke these sensations while studying, working, and sleeping.

There are several physical sensations that many people feel when listening to ASMR, including light and pleasurable tingles, "fuzzy feelings", or waves of relaxation in the head, neck, spine, and throughout the rest of the body. Other reported sensations include calmness, stillness, sleepiness, peacefulness and deep feelings of relaxation.
