How Does Binaural Work?

Binaural Must be Listened to on Headphones

In order to experience true binaural sound, left and right isolation of the ears is required using any headphones or earbuds. Listening to binaural on speakers results in cross-talk and a loss of directionality.

The Shape of the Microphone Matters

True binaural audio requires a microphone with human-shaped ears in order to capture and replicate how we hear the natural world. The ears are spaced about 6" apart to mimic the average width of the human head.

Binaural Provides Directionality

Binaural audio allows us to pinpoint the locations of a sound source from every direction using only a stereo signal.

Head Related Transfer Function (HRTF)

HRTF is a term to describe the way that our head and ears shape the sounds that we hear. Despite the lack of a full dummy head, the shape of the 3Dio ears and ear disks are designed to maximize the binaural realism of the HRTF that you hear, while still providing a portable binaural audio solution.

An External Device is Needed

Like most condenser microphones, an external device is needed in order to process the output signal of a 3Dio microphone. There are many different ways to do this and the type of device you'll need depends on how you want to use the microphone. To record/stream into a computer or record into a smartphone, we recommend a two-channel audio interface or USB mixer. 3Dio microphones can also connect directly to a DSLR camera, a digital recorder, or a mixing console. You can also record into your smartphone using a special audio interface. All external devices are sold separately.

Proper Cables are Key

Not all cables are the same. Our FS model contains an unbalanced 3.5mm stereo output.

A 3.5mm TRS to 3.5mm TRS M2M cable can plug directly into a digital recorder or DSLR camera.

Alternatively, a 3.5mm to dual 1/4" splitter cable can connect the 3.5mm stereo output of the 3Dio to an audio interface or mixing console with 1/4" inputs.

Our FS XLR & FS Pro II models contain two (2) mono 3-pin male XLR balanced outputs, one for each ear. The XLR outputs provide enhanced RFI protection, higher quality sound and a louder output signal than the 3.5mm output. All FS XLR & FS Pro II models contain both XLR outputs and 3.5mm outputs. XLR cables typically come in 3 ft., 10 ft., & 25 ft. lengths.

Power Switch & Bass Roll-Off

All 3Dio FS series microphones have a power switch and bass roll-off switch that applies to the 3.5mm output only. The power switch applies the internal 9V battery power to the capsules. The bass roll-off switch reduces the lower frequencies and has a knee point of 160 hz.

When the 3Dio is not in use, we recommend turning the power switch to the OFF position to preserve the battery life.

3.5mm Output Requires a Battery

Inside all FS series microphones is a 9V battery that is used to power the 3.5mm output. This is especially useful when recording outdoors or on-the-go. The output is also ideal for connecting to a video camera or digital recorder. Having the mic self-powered offers an alternative to an XLR output (FS XLR & FS Pro II models) and can extend performance when phantom power is not available. When using a new 9V battery to power the capsules, you can record via the 3.5mm output for over 300 hours and replacing the battery is very simple.

Check out our tutorial video on how to replace the internal 9V battery:

Microphone Stand Adaptor

All 3Dio microphones include a 1/4"-20 to 5/8" microphone stand adapter installed in the base. The microphone stand adapter is removable. The base of the microphone has a 1/4"-20 female thread mounting hole that can be connected to a hot-shoe adapter or used to mount directly onto a tripod or grip handle.

Hardshell Case Included

All of our microphones ship in a hardshell protective case. The case is custom designed to withstand harsh conditions and protect your 3Dio microphone when not in use or when traveling. The case comes with a cavity for a connecting cable, product manual and room for wind muffs and grip handle accessories.

Recording Into a Digital Recorder

Connecting to a digital recorder is perhaps the easiest and quickest way to get up and running with a 3Dio microphone. Most digital recorders come equipped with a 3.5mm stereo input for quick connection to any 3Dio FS series model. To connect, simply use a 3.5mm TRS to 3.5mm TRS M2M cable.

Recording Into a Computer

Recording to a computer requires an audio interface or a USB-equipped mixing console to convert the analog signal from the 3Dio into a digital signal that your computer can understand. The preamps in these devices also boost the mic level signal from the 3Dio to a line level which is ideal for recording or streaming to your computer.

The 3Dio FS model can connect to a 2-channel audio interface using a 3.5mm to dual 1/4" splitter cable as shown. Many audio interfaces accept 1/4" connectors. When connecting a 1/4" connector to an audio interface, be sure to turn the interface phantom power OFF.

The 3Dio FS XLR & FS Pro II models can also connect to a 2-channel audio interface using XLR cables. When connecting via XLR, be sure to turn the 3Dio power OFF and the interface phantom power ON.

Once you have your audio interface setup, you'll just need some software to record/stream the audio. There are many free options available online, such as Audacity for recording and Twitch for streaming.
