How to Connect a 3Dio to Zoom H4n Recorder


  • All 3Dio FS series microphones are compatible with the Zoom H4n. There are 3 input types on the H4n:

    1. Stereo 3.5mm external microphone input
    2. Two (2) 1/4" (6.35mm) mono inputs
    3. Two (2) 3-pin XLR mono inputs


    Here are the different ways you can connect each 3Dio model.

    FS  |  FS XLR  |  FS Pro II

    3.5mm to 3.5mm Cable

    1. Plug one end of the cable into the 3.5mm output of the 3Dio.
    2. Plug the other end of the cable into the EXT MIC input on the back of the H4n.
    3. Turn the 3Dio power switch to the ON position.
    4. Turn the Zoom H4n power switch to the ON position.
    5. Confirm that the Zoom H4n is in STEREO mode.
    6. Press the MIC button on the H4n.
    7. Plug headphones into the headphone output jack.
    8. Adjust the REC LEVEL and VOLUME settings accordingly to suit your needs.


    3.5mm to dual 1/4" (6.35mm) Stereo Splitter Cable

    1. Plug the 3.5mm end of the cable into the 3.5mm output of the 3Dio.
    2. Plug the white (sometimes black) 1/4" connector into CH1 combo input on the bottom of the H4n.
    3. Plug the red 1/4" connector into CH2 combo input on the bottom fo the H4n.
    4. Turn the 3Dio power switch to the ON position.
    5. Turn the Zoom H4n power switch to the ON position.
    6. Confirm that the Zoom H4n is in STEREO mode.
    7. Press the 1 & 2 buttons below the LCD screen to activate track 1 & 2.
    8. Plug headphones into the headphone output jack.
    9. Adjust the REC LEVEL and VOLUME settings accordingly to suit your needs.

    FS XLR  |  FS Pro II

    Two (2) 3-pin XLR Cables

    1. Connect both XLR cables to the 3Dio.
    2. Connect the Left Ear XLR cable to the CH1 combo input on the bottom of the H4n.
    3. Connect the Right Ear XLR cable to the CH2 combo input on the bottom of the H4n.
    4. Turn the 3Dio power switch to the OFF position.
    5. Turn the Zoom H4n power switch to the ON position.
    6. Confirm that the Zoom H4n is in STEREO mode.
    7. Press the 1 & 2 buttons below the LCD screen to activate track 1 & 2.
    8. Press the Menu button on the side to access the H4n menu.
    9. From the main menu, rotate the dial until 'INPUT' is highlighted. Push in on the dial to select.
    10. Rotate the dial until 'PHANTOM' is highlighted. Push in on the dial to select.
    11. Rotate the dial until '48V' is highlighted. Push in on the dial to select.
    12. Press the menu button several times to exit the menu.
    13. Plug headphones into the headphone output jack.
    14. Adjust the REC LEVEL and VOLUME settings accordingly to suit your needs.
