3Dio FS developed persistent metallic ringing/resonance

  Hello 3Dio Support,

  I own a 3Dio Free Space (FS) microphone that recently developed a persistent metallic/ringing resonance when recording close-up sounds.

  The microphone worked normally with this exact setup until approximately one week ago. The ringing is especially noticeable when I talk, blow, rub, tap, or cup the silicone ears. It occurs on both sides.

  My setup is:

  • 3Dio Free Space (original FS)
  • 3.5 mm stereo output
  • 3.5 mm TRS to dual 1/4" TS splitter
  • Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 3rd Gen
  • 48V phantom power OFF
  • Internal 9V battery

  I have performed the following troubleshooting:

  • Replaced the 9V battery
  • Completely powered off my VIVE base stations
  • Removed my headphone connection entirely
  • Removed the extension cable and connected the 3Dio directly to the Scarlett
  • Tested with the Scarlett gain extremely low
  • Tested both physical ears independently
  • Tested the 3.5 mm connection for movement/crackling
  • Tested the Bass Roll-Off in both FLAT and ON positions

  The ringing persists through all of these tests.

  The ringing is not simply present as a constant background noise; it is strongly excited by particular sounds directed toward the ears and by physical stimulation of the silicone ears. I have attached an audio/video sample demonstrating the behavior.

  Could you please listen to the sample and let me know whether this sounds like an issue with the microphone/capsules or its internal electronics? If so, I would also appreciate information about the repair or replacement process.

  I am happy to provide additional recordings or perform any other diagnostic tests you recommend.

  Hi @cweam cat,

  Thank you for your post. I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing a ringing sound with your microphone.

  When you recorded the file provided, were you wearing headphones?
  Does the ringing happen when headphones are not connected to your Scarlett/Computer?

  It sounds like feedback caused by headphones being worn during the recording. If the ringing sound is intermittent and happening when you engage with the mic, then it is most likely feedback from the headphones.

  I would try recording without any headphones or speakers connected to the Scarlett or your computer to try and recreate the ringing sound. If it can still be heard in the recording when no headphones are plugged in, then we can rule out feedback.

  How long have you had the microphone?
  Also, did you use a brand new 9V battery? Is it a rechargeable battery, or a standard alkaline battery?
