Using the 3Dio with the SSL2 Interface

  • Hi all,

Hope all is well. My partner bought the 3Dio FS (non-XLR) SSL2 a number of years ago and has never been able to get it working. I only discovered this recently so have been trying to suggest potential solutions and thought I'd reach out here:

    • Mostly recently, she tried to use a brand new TRS to 2 x TS splitter. The best result we've had is when gain was turned up to max on both channels on the SSL2 and line input was pressed (which shouldn't need to be the case I think). Her voice was very faint but there was a very strong hissing sound.
    • The same scenario as above but with line input turned off resulted in her voice being faint in only one ear with the hissing again.

I'd assume a battery replacement could solve it but I wanted to check if there are any other ideas. Worth noting that the interface sees regular use with other mics (via XLR) without any problems.

    Thanks!

  • Hi @Cory Lawrence,

Thanks for reaching out to us and for the explanation.

If the mic hasn't been used in a few years, then I would definitely recommend replacing the 9V battery inside the mic as a first step. If the battery is dead, you will get little to no signal.

On the SSL2, turn OFF the 'line', '48V', and the high pass filter (horizontal line with a slant on the left) for both channels 1 & 2. Make sure the 1/4" connectors on the splitter cable are plugged into the combo 1/4"/XLR combo inputs on the back of the SSL2. Set the gain knobs for each channel to 12 o'clock or about 50%. Make sure these gain knobs settings are identical for both channels.

Listen/monitor directly via the headphone output of the SSL. With this setup, and a brand new battery inside the 3Dio, you should get a very audible signal. Adjust the gain and headphone volume knobs to adjust the output levels.

I hope this helps. Let us know if you're still not able to get the mic functioning again.

    Best regards,

    ~Brian
